Which airport for La Romana 2026 — LRM vs PUJ vs SDQ

Answer first · updated September 2026 · written by the dispatch desk

If you are staying in Casa de Campo, La Romana, Bayahibe or Dominicus, fly into La Romana International (LRM) — it sits inside that corner of the country and the transfer is 10 to 40 minutes. Punta Cana (PUJ) adds roughly 1 to 1.5 hours of road each way; Santo Domingo–Las Américas (SDQ) adds about 1 hour 45 to 2 hours. Both make sense when the flight is dramatically better or LRM has nothing on your dates. We run fixed-price transfers from all three, so whichever you choose, the drive is booked the same way.

The short answer — LRM for the Casa de Campo and Bayahibe coast

Most people reading this are choosing between flights, not airports. The resort decision is simple: La Romana International was built for this stretch of the south-east coast and sits inside it. From the LRM curb it is 10 to 20 minutes to Casa de Campo, 25 to 35 to Bayahibe, 30 to 40 to the Dominicus resorts. Your holiday starts within the hour you land.

PUJ and SDQ are not wrong answers — they are answers to different questions. PUJ serves the Bávaro–Cap Cana resort corridor and has by far the deepest route network; SDQ serves the capital and a big scheduled network. Both are covered below with the cases where each genuinely wins.

What we see from the desk: guests who booked a cheaper PUJ or SDQ ticket for a Bayahibe holiday, then priced the long road transfer for four people, usually wish they had compared the total rather than the ticket. That comparison is the point of this guide.

The three airports at a glance

La Romana International (LRM) is a small, calm airport on the south-east coast, used by charters from Europe and Canada, seasonal scheduled flights and private aviation. Drive times from the curb: La Romana town 10–15 minutes, Casa de Campo 10–20, Bayahibe 25–35, Dominicus 30–40, Higüey 45–60, Juan Dolio around an hour.

Punta Cana International (PUJ) is the busiest airport in the country, at the eastern tip. From PUJ it is roughly 1 hour to Bayahibe and Dominicus, and 1 to 1.5 hours to Casa de Campo and La Romana town. It is the right airport if you are actually staying in Bávaro, Cap Cana, Macao or Uvero Alto.

Santo Domingo–Las Américas (SDQ) is the capital's airport, on the coast east of the city. To La Romana and Casa de Campo it is roughly 1 hour 45 to 2 hours on the Autovía del Este; to Bayahibe a little more. To Santo Domingo city itself it is obviously the correct airport, 30 to 40 minutes from the colonial zone.

When LRM wins — which, for this coast, is almost always

Any stay in Casa de Campo, Altos de Chavón, La Romana town, Bayahibe, Dominicus, or at Dreams Dominicus, Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus, Catalonia Bayahibe, Viva Dominicus and the Hilton La Romana area. The airport is inside the zone and the transfer is the short fixed-price ride on our price list: Casa de Campo $29, Bayahibe $40, Dominicus $45.

Saona Island day trips are the other clean case. The boats leave from Bayahibe and Dominicus, so a guest flying into LRM is 25 to 40 minutes from the pier rather than an hour and a half.

The first-hour argument is the strongest one. After a long flight, the difference between a 30-minute ride to Dominicus and a 2-hour motorway run from SDQ is not a detail — it is the first evening of the holiday.

When Punta Cana (PUJ) makes sense

The honest cases: you are staying in Bávaro, Cap Cana, Punta Cana Village, Arena Gorda, Macao or Uvero Alto, where PUJ is the local airport; LRM has no flight on your dates, which is common outside the charter season; or the PUJ fare and schedule are dramatically better and you are willing to trade an hour of road.

Run the false-economy math before you book. A family of four saving $60 a head on a PUJ ticket saves $240. The PUJ-to-Bayahibe transfer is a long-run fixed price per vehicle each way against $40 from LRM, and the round trip eats a good part of that saving — plus two to three extra hours in the car across the holiday. Use your real fares, but compare the total.

If PUJ is the right airport for you, book it without hesitation. We meet PUJ arrivals the same way: fixed per-vehicle price in writing, flight tracking, name sign inside arrivals, payment to the driver at the end.

When Santo Domingo (SDQ) makes sense

SDQ wins when you are spending real time in the capital — the colonial zone, family, business — before or after the beach, or when your route from Europe or Latin America is much better into SDQ than anywhere else. It is also the fallback when both LRM and PUJ are sold out in peak weeks.

The drive is straightforward: the Autovía del Este runs almost the whole way to La Romana, so it is a smooth 1 hour 45 to 2 hours rather than a difficult road. Our fixed rate in the other direction — La Romana to Santo Domingo or SDQ — is $110 Standard, $180 VIP, per vehicle.

Split airports are easy and common: in through SDQ because the flight worked, out through LRM because the return did. It is one booking message, priced as two one-way legs.

The transfer math — and how booking works from any airport

Every transfer we run is the same product regardless of airport: a private vehicle, a fixed US-dollar price per vehicle confirmed in writing before you fly, flight tracking so a delay moves the driver and not the price, a name sign inside arrivals, and payment to the driver on arrival. One to six passengers per vehicle; seven to fourteen move to a van at plus $20 Standard or plus $40 VIP.

Per-vehicle pricing is what changes the airport comparison. Shared shuttles charge per seat, so a long PUJ or SDQ run multiplies by headcount; a fixed per-vehicle rate is one number for the whole family. That is why the LRM advantage grows with party size, not shrinks.

Whatever you decide, send the flight number and the hotel on WhatsApp and we confirm the figure before you fly. The prices page lists every zone from LRM, and the long-run rates cover Santo Domingo, Cap Cana, Bávaro and Uvero Alto.

Questions we get on this

Which airport is closest to Casa de Campo?
La Romana International (LRM) — 10 to 20 minutes by road, $29 Standard per vehicle. Punta Cana is 1 to 1.5 hours away and Santo Domingo about 2 hours.
Which airport should I use for Bayahibe and Dominicus?
LRM. It is 25 to 35 minutes to Bayahibe and 30 to 40 to Dominicus, at $40 and $45 Standard per vehicle. From PUJ the same trip is about an hour, from SDQ around two.
Is it worth flying into Punta Cana to save on airfare?
Only if the total still wins. Add the longer transfer both ways and two to three extra hours in the car, then compare against the LRM fare. For families the transfer difference often cancels the ticket saving.
How long is the drive from Santo Domingo (SDQ) to La Romana?
Roughly 1 hour 45 to 2 hours on the Autovía del Este in normal traffic, a little more to Bayahibe. We run it as a fixed-price service at $110 Standard per vehicle.
Can I fly into SDQ and out of LRM?
Yes — split airports are a normal booking. Each leg is priced as its zone one-way and the departure pickup is timed on the buffer for your zone. Send both flight numbers in one message.
Does LRM have enough flights?
It is a boutique airport with a handful of movements a day, heavy on European and Canadian charters plus seasonal scheduled service. Outside the winter season the choice thins, which is when PUJ or SDQ becomes the practical option.
Do you serve Punta Cana and Santo Domingo airports too?
Yes. Pickups at PUJ and SDQ work exactly like LRM: fixed per-vehicle price confirmed in writing, flight tracking, name sign inside arrivals, and payment to the driver at the end of the ride.
