Cruise port transfers: La Romana and Santo Domingo

The two ports, and which one is yours

La Romana is the terminal almost everyone flying into LRM uses, and the reason the airport exists on many itineraries. It sits beside Casa de Campo on the south-east coast, a 10 to 15 minute drive from the airport, and it is a home port for several Caribbean itineraries as well as a frequent port of call. If your ticket says La Romana, Casa de Campo or LRM cruise terminal, this is it.

Sans Souci is the Santo Domingo terminal, on the Ozama river across from the Colonial Zone. From LRM it is a 1 h 45 to 2 hour drive along the coast highway, plus city traffic at the Santo Domingo end. Some itineraries call it Santo Domingo, some call it Don Diego or Sans Souci — they are the same riverside area and the driver knows the difference.

A third possibility is that you are sailing from somewhere else entirely and only landing here. If your ship leaves from San Juan or Miami, you do not need a port transfer — you need an airport transfer and a hotel, and our prices page has the zone rates.

Flying into LRM on embarkation day

This works, and thousands of passengers do it, but it needs a margin. Your driver tracks the flight, so a delay does not lose the booking. What a delay can lose is the ship, and the ship is the one thing we cannot hold.

The rule of thumb we give people: land at LRM at least four hours before the boarding window closes for La Romana, and at least six for Santo Domingo. That covers immigration and baggage at LRM — usually 20 to 35 minutes, since the airport handles only a handful of flights a day — plus the drive, plus the check-in queue at the terminal. The La Romana port is close enough that a same-day sailing is genuinely comfortable from LRM, which is rarely true from the bigger airports.

If your flight lands later than that, the safer plan is a night in La Romana, Casa de Campo or Bayahibe and a short morning run to the port. It costs a hotel night; missing embarkation costs the cruise.

Timing the drive to the terminal

We plan the pickup backwards from your boarding window, exactly the way a departure transfer is planned backwards from a flight. Tell dispatch the terminal, the ship name and the latest boarding time printed on your cruise documents, and we set the lobby time from there.

As a working figure, from La Romana, Casa de Campo, Bayahibe or Dominicus hotels we aim to arrive at the La Romana terminal around three hours before the boarding cut-off, and at Sans Souci around three to four hours before, because the Santo Domingo drive has more that can go wrong: rain on the coast highway, roadworks and city traffic near the river.

Arriving early at a cruise terminal is not wasted time. You drop bags with the porters, clear check-in and security, and are on board with a drink while the late arrivals are still queuing. Arriving late is not recoverable.

Disembarkation: the pier pickup

Coming off a ship is slower than coming off a plane. Groups are called by deck or by luggage tag colour, the terminal hall fills, and the gap between the published arrival time and the moment you actually walk out with your suitcase is routinely an hour or more.

That is fine — the driver waits. Give dispatch the ship name and the scheduled arrival, and the driver is at the terminal exit with your name on a sign, in the meeting area the port allows vehicles to use. If your group is slower than expected, message on WhatsApp; nobody drives off because a ship was leisurely.

The most common disembarkation booking is port to LRM for a flight home the same day. If that is you, send the flight number too, so we can tell you honestly whether the timing works. From the La Romana terminal it almost always does — the airport is fifteen minutes away. From Sans Souci with an early afternoon flight out of LRM or PUJ, it often does not, and we will say so rather than take a booking that fails.

What it costs

The port runs are priced like every other route on the site: fixed per vehicle, not per person, with taxes and tolls included and no surcharge for a night or early-morning departure.

LRM airport to the La Romana cruise terminal is $25 in a standard vehicle and $59 VIP, the same rate as our La Romana zone page; from Casa de Campo it is $29 / $65 and from Bayahibe $40 / $79. LRM to Sans Souci in Santo Domingo is $110 standard and $180 VIP, matching the Santo Domingo zone rate. The same prices apply in the other direction, port to hotel or port to airport.

Bigger groups move up to a van rather than paying a second fare, and the vehicle sizes are explained in the groups and luggage guide. Cruise luggage tends to be large and plentiful, so tell dispatch the real number of suitcases when you book — it decides the vehicle.

Combining a port run with a day in the Colonial Zone

Because Sans Souci sits directly across from the Colonial Zone, passengers with a long port call often ask for a driver for the day rather than a one-way transfer. That is a day trip with a private driver: the vehicle stays with you, waits while you walk the cobbled streets and the Alcázar, and returns you to the pier well before all-aboard.

Terminals are working ports with controlled access, so meeting points are wherever the port authority allows vehicles that day. Your driver knows the current arrangement and messages you on arrival. You get a fixed price for the vehicle and a lobby or arrivals meeting time worked backwards from your boarding window. Most cruise passengers book the airport pickup, the port run and the return to LRM in one conversation, which is also the easiest way to keep the timings consistent.

Book port transfers earlier than airport transfers when you can. Ships arrive and depart in blocks, so demand at the terminal is concentrated into a couple of hours on specific dates.
