Where Bayahibe actually is, and why the name confuses people
Bayahibe is a small fishing village on the south-east coast, about 20 kilometres east of La Romana and the same distance from the airport. Next to it, along one beach road, sits the Dominicus strip: a line of large all-inclusive resorts on Playa Dominicus. Locals and hotels use the two names almost interchangeably, and several properties carry a third name entirely.
That is where bookings go wrong. Hilton La Romana is not in La Romana town, it is on the Dominicus side, and it is billed at the Dominicus rate of $45 Standard. Iberostar Selection Hacienda Dominicus is not the Iberostar on the Bávaro strip, which is a completely different resort two hours away. Catalonia Gran Dominicus sits at the far end of the same beach road, and Viva Dominicus Beach and Palace share one access.
So when you book, give the exact resort name rather than the town. Each of those hotels has its own page on this site with the drive, the entrance and the rate, and the driver is dispatched against the property, not the postcode.
The drive from LRM: route, time and what the road is like
From La Romana airport the car heads east along the coast road towards Bayahibe, then turns down towards the water. It is a short, easy run with no motorway and no toll plaza drama, and traffic is essentially never the problem — this is a quiet corner of the country.
Plan 25 to 35 minutes to Bayahibe village and the pier, and 30 to 40 minutes to the Dominicus resorts. Add ten minutes in heavy rain, and a few more if you are staying at the far end of the Dominicus road, past the earlier resorts.
The transfer times page lists every zone if you want to compare with Casa de Campo, Higüey or the Punta Cana side. Bayahibe is one of the shortest resort runs in the country from its own airport, which is most of why people fly into LRM in the first place.
The Dominicus checkpoint
One shared guard post sits at the start of the Dominicus beach road and serves every resort along it. The guard checks the hotel name before waving the car through, so the exact property name in your booking is not a formality — it is what keeps the car moving without a phone call at the barrier.
Once past the checkpoint, each resort has its own entrance and reception. Properties split into adults-only and family sections, like Hilton La Romana and the two Viva Dominicus properties, share one entrance but separate lobbies, so name the section too.

Why a shared shuttle hurts even on a short route
On a 30-minute run the damage is not the driving, it is the waiting. A shared vehicle leaves when it is full, and at an airport with a handful of daily flights that can mean standing in the hall for 45 minutes while the operator waits for a second aircraft. A private car leaves when you are in it.
Then the loop. Shuttles fill with passengers heading to four or five different resorts along the same beach road and work down it in order, so a 30-minute drive becomes an hour and a quarter for the last family off — after a long flight, with children.

Saona island: how the morning really runs
Saona is the reason most people come to this coast. The boats — catamarans and speedboats — leave from Bayahibe village and from Dominicus beach in the morning, usually between 07:30 and 09:00, and return mid to late afternoon. It is part of Parque Nacional del Este, so all trips run with licensed operators from those departure points.
If you are staying on the Dominicus or Bayahibe strip, you are already there: the excursion desk collects you from the lobby or you walk to the pier. Your transfer only has to get you to the hotel the day before, which is the simple case — and it is the main reason guests pick this coast over Bávaro for a Saona trip.
If you are staying in Casa de Campo or La Romana town, the pier is 20 to 30 minutes away and an early private run gets you there comfortably. Which airport should you fly into for Bayahibe?
La Romana airport (LRM) is the obvious answer at 25 to 40 minutes from the strip. It is a small airport served mainly by European and Canadian charters plus seasonal scheduled flights, so the choice thins outside the winter season.
Punta Cana (PUJ) is roughly an hour away with by far the widest schedule, and it is a sensible fallback when LRM has nothing on your dates. Santo Domingo (SDQ) is about two hours and usually only makes sense if you are spending time in the capital or the fare difference is large.

Prices, vehicles and what is included
One way, per vehicle, one to six passengers, taxes and tolls included: Bayahibe $40 Standard or $79 VIP; Dominicus $45 Standard or $85 VIP; La Romana town $25 or $59; Casa de Campo $29 or $65. The La Romana cruise terminal is covered in the cruise port guide and rides at the La Romana rate.
Standard is a modern air-conditioned car or SUV. VIP is a luxury SUV or executive vehicle. Seven to fourteen passengers go in a van, which adds $20 to the Standard rate and $40 to VIP. Car seats are free, and bottled water is in the vehicle.

The return: leave earlier than you think
Going home from Bayahibe or Dominicus, the lobby pickup is 2.5 hours before departure from LRM. The drive is short, but the airport runs a single security line and a charter check-in that opens and closes on its own schedule, so the buffer is about the terminal, not the road.

If your flight home leaves from Punta Cana or Santo Domingo instead, say so when booking; the buffer and the price both change.
